Stage 3 - Developing

Stage 3 – Almost There

This person may be 17 years old. They will have been a Young Leader for a number of years and will be confident in their scouting skills and leadership ability. They will have the respect from the Young People in the section and may be considering taking out an adult appointment at 18.

What they should be doing

  • Creating and running programmes

  • Creating and running camps

  • Maintaining discipline

  • Housekeeping and other leader activities

  • Identifying what needs doing without prompting

How to support

  • Encourage them to complete the Young Leader Belt

  • Support your Young Leader to complete Mission 3 (take ideas to a planning meeting)

  • Support your Young Leader to complete Mission 4 (taking responsibility for running part of a section, this is to get them to start working as a section assistant, to really demonstrate leadership skills)

  • Introduce them to the District Network Co-ordinator

  • Ensure they know about the adult appointment process and introduce them to their Training Advisor

  • Explain how their Young Leaders experience can validate some of their adult learning modules

  • Provide regular feedback to them

  • Include them in leaders’ meetings (Mission 3)

  • Start their DBS clearance at 17½

  • Prompt them to use their YL experience on their CV (employability guidance here)

Don’t expect

  • The Young Leader to get it right all the time

  • To only do the mundane jobs

  • To have no input or opinions
