Stage 2A – Maturing as a Leader

This person may be 16 or 17 years old, but they may be new to scouting, or find leadership difficult.

They might command respect from the young people in the section, but they find it difficult to generate programme ideas and run activities.

What they should be doing

  • Running programmes created by the section leader

  • Helping to maintain discipline

  • Running games (Mission 1)

  • Supporting others learning skills

  • Helping with uniform checksand inspection

  • Helping with refreshment breaks

  • Help with general housekeeping

  • Collecting money

How to support

  • Encourage them to attend the Young Leader training sessions

  • Help Young Leader to complete Mission 1 (run 3 games)

  • Help Young Leader to complete Mission 2 (run an activity)

  • Teach them scouting skills

  • Let them help create programmes

  • Start to involve them in leaders planning meetings (supports Mission 3)

Don’t expect

  • The Young Leader to give clear instructions

  • To rely on the Young Leader to pass on skills
